Golf Experience Days for Beginners

Never picked up a club? A golf lesson with a PGA professional is the best place to start.

Excellentbased on customer reviews

Golf can feel intimidating at the start. Courses have dress codes, there is etiquette to learn, and walking onto a driving range with no idea what you are doing is not most people's idea of a relaxing afternoon. A golf experience day with a PGA professional removes all of that. You turn up, someone who knows what they are doing takes charge, and you leave having actually learned something.

Is a golf experience day suitable for complete beginners?

Yes, and it is arguably the best option for someone who has never played. PGA professionals are trained to work with all ability levels, including people who have never held a club. When the recipient contacts Swyng to book, they will be asked about their experience level so the professional can plan the session accordingly. There is no expectation that you arrive knowing anything.

You do not need your own clubs either. Most PGA professionals can provide clubs for the session. Mention it when booking and it will be arranged.

Which experience should a beginner choose?

For a complete beginner, the best starting point is the half-hour or one-hour golf lesson. These take place on the driving range or practice area, which is the right environment for learning the basics without the pressure of playing a full round.

The half-hour lesson (from £35) works well for someone who just wants a taste of the game. The one-hour lesson (from £65) is more popular because it gives the professional enough time to cover grip, stance, ball position, and the basic swing without rushing. Most beginners leave with something they can practise on their own.

If you want to give something more substantial, the course of six lessons (from £180) is the best gift for a beginner. One session introduces the basics; six sessions builds habits that stick. The recipient works with the same professional throughout, which means continuity and proper progression rather than starting from scratch each time.

What happens during the lesson?

The PGA professional will typically begin with a short conversation about the recipient's goals and any previous experience. For a beginner, the lesson will then cover:

Most professionals will also give the recipient one or two things to focus on after the session so they can continue improving on their own.

What should a beginner wear and bring?

For a range lesson, smart-casual clothing is fine at most venues. Golf shoes are not required for a first lesson. Trainers with a flat sole work well. The course or professional may have a dress code — no denim is standard — but this will be communicated when booking.

If the recipient does not own clubs, let Swyng know when booking and the professional will provide a set for the session. There is no additional charge for this in most cases.

Is a playing lesson right for a beginner?

Not usually. A playing lesson involves going out onto the course for 9 or 18 holes with the PGA professional alongside. This format is better suited to someone who already has some grasp of the game and wants to improve their on-course decision making. For a complete beginner, a range-based lesson first is the right starting point.
